One of the most illusive yet most widely used terms in the various arts, “ realism” has been much debated and defined since the early days of motion pictures.

In its most uncomplicated meaning, realism in film refers to a direct and truthful view of the real world through the presentation of characters and their physical surroundings with minimal distortion from either the filmmaker’s point of view or from filmic technique.
